More than 92,300 people in Austria have taken advantage of the government’s Handwerkerbonus, or craftsperson bonus, the Ministry of Labour and Economy has announced.

So far, around 78.8% of the applications received by the Federal Accounting Agency (BHAG) have been processed, with approximately €23 million already paid out.

The scheme offers a refund on home improvements carried out by skilled tradespeople, such as painting, kitchen installations, tiling, and window replacements. Up to 20% of labour costs can be reimbursed, with a maximum grant of €2,000 for 2024, reducing to €1,500 in 2025. Individuals are eligible to submit one application per calendar year, covering multiple invoices.

A total of €300 million has been earmarked for the scheme across 2024 and 2025.

Here’s how to apply for the bonus.

The average refund is currently around €800, according to the ministry, with the most common applications being for carpentry, painting, and gas and plumbing work. Labour Minister Martin Kocher stressed the importance of the scheme in driving investment in high-quality trades.

Lower Austria leads the way in applications, with around 25,300 submitted, followed by Upper Austria (21,600) and Styria (13,400). To avoid an end-of-year rush, the ministry recommends submitting applications for 2024 by February 28 next year.
