The average Austrian resident is set to spend €126 on New Year’s festivities this year, giving a welcome boost to local shops and businesses.
“It’s a key revenue driver for the domestic market,” said Rainer Will, Managing Director of the Trade Association, citing figures from market analysts Reppublika.
Total spending is expected to hit €600 million, with the food and drinks sector taking the largest share. Other areas, such as stationery, DIY stores and fashion outlets, are also set to benefit.
Vienna Leads the Spending
Vienna tops the spending table, with residents forking out an average of €139 each. Upper Austria and Salzburg aren’t far behind, at €134 per person. Meanwhile, Styria and Carinthia come in at the lower end, with an average spend of €112. Regions like Lower Austria, Burgenland, Tyrol and Vorarlberg sit around the national average of €120.
Lucky Charms and Alcohol
Half of Austrians are expected to buy lucky charms and festive treats. Sparkling wine, champagne and other alcoholic drinks are next on the list, purchased by 47%. A quarter of people plan to treat themselves to special sweets, while 14% will splash out on fireworks, and nearly as many will buy decorations.
Health Tops New Year’s Resolutions
When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, self-care is high on the agenda for 72% of people in Austria. Healthy eating takes the lead for 62%, followed by exercise and sport. Meanwhile, 58% aim to spend more time with friends and family in the year ahead.
