A large-scale police operation in Wiener Neustadt on Monday saw parts of the city centre cordoned off, with residents urged to stay indoors as officers raided a vacant multi-storey building in the pedestrian zone.
Major cannabis plantations were discovered inside the property, with authorities suspecting it had been used by a criminal organisation.
During the operation, Neunkirchner StraĂźe and Brodtischgasse were closed to pedestrians and vehicles for several hours. The building in question, known as the former Brodtisch Passage, was thoroughly searched by officers.
Special Forces and Drones Deployed
Police spokesperson Johann Baumschlager said the elite Cobra task force, supported by drones and police dogs, carried out the search after officers reported “contact with the suspect.” Despite their efforts, the suspect managed to flee the scene.
Baumschlager reassured the public, stating: “The surrounding area will remain under police control. Investigations into suspected drug crime and links to organised crime are ongoing.”
A handgun was also recovered from the property and is being examined as part of the investigation.
Unusual Power Bills Raise Suspicion
Authorities believe the plantations were uncovered after unusually high electricity bills raised suspicions. Baumschlager described the case as a significant example of drug-related crime, noting that “further investigations are needed.”
The police have thanked the public for their cooperation during the operation and confirmed that their presence in the area will continue for the time being.
