With Christmas markets set to begin soon, Austria’s Federal Criminal Police Office is cautioning visitors to be on guard against pickpockets. The bustling crowds and festive atmosphere create ideal conditions for criminals looking to steal valuables unnoticed, officials said on Thursday.
The combination of holiday lights, attractions, and perhaps a warm punch or two provides pickpockets with ample distraction to target unsuspecting visitors. Organized groups are expected to take advantage of the situation, attempting to steal wallets, phones, and other items. Experts also warn of trick thieves, who may use distraction techniques such as spilling drinks or showing maps and flyers to divert attention from their actions.
To minimize the risk of theft, police recommend keeping valuables close to the body or leaving them at home altogether. Wallets, phones, and keys are best stored in inner pockets that can be securely closed. Handbags and backpacks should be kept closed, worn near the front of the body, and with valuable items placed at the bottom.
“Be particularly mindful of your bags in crowded areas and when lining up at market stalls, as these situations are prime targets for thieves,” police advised. A healthy degree of caution is also encouraged when approached by strangers, distracted by spilled drinks, or unexpectedly bumped. Police further suggest carrying only as much cash as necessary and, if a theft does occur, immediately contacting authorities and canceling any credit, bank, and SIM cards.
