Vienna Airport Drops €2 Billion Third Runway Plan

Vienna Airport cancels long-planned third runway after rising costs, delays, and airline opposition; future expansion still possible.

Austrian Airlines (AUA) continued to lead passenger traffic at Vienna Airport in 2024, holding a 46% market share.

Described as an “absolute record,” the figure surpassed the airport’s pre-pandemic peak in 2019 by roughly 50,000 passengers.

The three smugglers, who travelled from Egypt, now face penalties of up to €80,000 each, with tax evasion proceedings underway.

Police say 21 suspects, aged between 20 and 54, have been arrested and taken into custody following the operation, which began in July.

The Airbus A320 had been flying from Palma de Mallorca to Vienna on June 9 when it encountered a violent thunderstorm.

From January to June, the customs service dogs undertook more than 600 missions, resulting in over 550 arrests.

The drugs were hidden in the seat and backrest of an electric wheelchair belonging to a 39-year-old Venezuelan national.
