Finding a suitable bathing spot for your dog in Vienna can be a challenge, but the Austrian capital still offers some excellent opportunities for dogs to cool off.

In 2022, the most recent year for which data is available, there were just over 55,000 dogs registered in Vienna – the second-highest number in recent years, following 2014, which recorded 61,961 dogs.

Regardless of the numbers, dogs – like their human companions – need to stay cool in soaring temperatures.

Here are five dog-friendly swimming zones managed by the City of Vienna:

  • North Dog Beach (14,000 square metres), located on the Danube Island between the Floridsdorfer Bridge and the North Bridge (Nordbrücke) on the left bank of the Danube, from kilometre 15.3 to 15.8 of the Danube Island.

Directions: Tram 31, stop “Floridsdorfer Brücke”

  • South Dog Beach (21,000 square metres), situated between the Stadlauer Ostbahn Bridge and the Prater Bridge, directly at the shore of the New Danube, from kilometre 8.5 to 9.1 of the Danube Island.

Directions: U2, buses 92A or 92B, stop “Donaustadtbrücke”

  • Dog Zone next to Angelibad (14,000 square metres) in the 21st district, at Ferdinand-Kaufmann-Platz

Directions: U6, station “Neue Donau” or bus 20B, stop “Sandrockgasse”

  • Hirschstetten Pond (27,000 square metres) in the 22nd district, at the southwest shore in the lower area of Spargelfeldstraße

Directions: Bus 85A, stop “Badeteich Hirschstetten”, or tram 26, stop “Oberfeldgasse/Spargelfeldstraße” or “Ziegelhofstraße”

  • Aspern Lake (3,000 square metres) in the Seestadt Aspern area of the 22nd district.

Directions: U2, station “Seestadt”
