Vienna City Marathon 2025: Road Closure and Itinerary

Vienna City Marathon/ALEXEEV SERGEY

The 42nd Vienna City Marathon will cause traffic delays starting Friday. Drivers should expect restrictions on the Ringstraße, with the area between Stadiongasse and Schottengasse being closed off from 8:00 PM.

On Marathon day, Sunday, large-scale closures will occur throughout Vienna. The city center should be avoided. It is also recommended to avoid other districts within the Gürtel and parts of Leopoldstadt and Brigittenau on Marathon day. The city highways will remain open except for access to the city center. Access to the affected districts will be possible until about 8:30 AM on Sunday via Friedensbrücke, Rossauer Brücke, Augartenbrücke, and Salztorbrücke. Exits from the city center and Alsergrund towards the Südosttangente (A23) will be possible from 11:20 AM via Franz-Josefs-Kai, Uraniastraße, Dampfschiffstraße, Weißgerber Lände, and Erdberger Lände.

Limited access to Mariahilf and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus

The Zweierlinie can only be driven toward Neubau between Alserstraße and Neustiftgasse (except for access to the MuseumsQuartier garage).

The district of Mariahilf and parts of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus will be very limited in accessibility between 8:30 AM and approximately 1:00 PM (during the race along Linke Wienzeile and back along Mariahilfer Straße). Access from the districts of Landstraße, Wieden, and Margareten towards the city center will be restricted to Schwarzenbergplatz, Lothringer Straße, and Karlsplatz.

Public transport restrictions

Public transportation will also be heavily affected by the marathon. A total of nearly 30 tram and bus lines will be partially shortened or rerouted on Sunday, including tram lines 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 18, 31, 43, 46, 52, 60, 71, D, and O, as well as bus lines 4A, 10A to 14A, 40A, 48A, 57A, 77A, 92A, and 92B. All U-Bahn lines will run more frequently than usual on Sunday. The Schnellbahn is a good alternative due to the numerous road closures.
