Around 3,400 Viennese citizens received information on various aspects of dog ownership at 375 locations across the city last year, with over 2,400 dog inspections conducted in public spaces such as streets and parks, the City of Vienna said in a press release on Tuesday.

The most common topics during consultations included microchipping and registration, discussed in 24% of sessions, as well as muzzle and leash requirements (13% of consultations). Other key areas covered were dog ban zones, dog training and behaviour and the cleaning law.

Dog inspections were also a major part of the Vienna Dog Team (Wiener Hunde-Team), a special division of the city’s veterinary office launched last year.

“In total, the staff of the Vienna Dog Team inspected over 2,400 dogs. Around 21% of the dogs stopped were not registered. A lack of a leash was noted in around 312 cases. Dogs were also repeatedly found in forbidden green areas in parks or in dog-free zones. In 543 cases, it was found that the dog tax had not been paid,” said Janina Tran, head of the Vienna Dog Team.

Ruth Jily, head of the Veterinary Office, added, “A total of 42 fines have been issued so far, for example, when a dog was not microchipped or registered, or when a restricted breed dog was found without a dog handler’s certificate.”
