The number of cyclists in Vienna rose by 5% in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to city officials, as authorities continue to expand the cycling infrastructure.

Over the course of last year, more than half a million additional cyclists were recorded at 17 counting stations, bringing the total number to 11.4 million.

“The expansion of the cycling network in our city is progressing at full speed, with more than 20 km of new cycle lanes added each year,” said Ulli Sima, Vienna’s Mobility Councillor. “Last year alone, around €53 million was invested, and the results are starting to show.”

Significant growth was seen on newly developed cycle paths, including Lassallestraße – a key section of Vienna’s first mega-cycling highway from the city centre to Kagran – and the new route through the 8th district along Pfeil-, Zelt- and Josefsgasse, where increases of 9% and 8% were recorded.

A historic milestone was reached at the Operngasse counting station, which recorded over 1.4 million cyclists, making it the busiest cycling point in Vienna. However, the largest growth came on the Prater Bridge, where cycling numbers increased by 18%.

Vienna now has 18 permanent counting stations, though the one on Argentinierstraße was temporarily out of service last year due to construction work for a new bike street. It has since resumed operations.

April 2024 saw the highest growth, with a remarkable 52% increase in cyclists compared to the previous year. July saw the highest total, with more than 1.5 million cyclists counted. However, September experienced a significant drop in cycling activity due to severe flooding, while December saw a historic 37% increase in numbers.

The city’s expansion of its cycling network is set to continue in 2025, with the first section of the Outer Mariahilfer Straße due for completion this year and work on the second section set to begin. Plans are also underway to enhance the cycling route connecting Ottakring through Hernals to the Gürtel, specifically the Geblergasse/Seeböckgasse cycling axis.
