Vienna to Add Hydrogen Buses in 2025

Ten new hydrogen-powered buses are set to be introduced to the centre of Vienna from 2025, the city’s transit authority, Wiener Linien, has announced.

The buses, manufactured by the Italian company Rampini, will operate on routes 2A and 3A, marking the first use of this technology in Vienna’s public transport system.

The Rampini Hydron buses use both an electric motor and a hydrogen fuel cell, which generates additional electrical energy during the journey.

This innovation allows the buses to operate continuously throughout the day, unlike the current electric buses in the city centre, which require breaks for recharging. As a result, the fleet required for routes 2A and 3A will be reduced from twelve buses to ten.

The city is investing around €12 million in the purchase and maintenance of the new Rampini buses, with support from the Ministry of Climate Protection and the European Union. The buses will refuel at a hydrogen charging station operated by energy companies Wien Energie and Wiener Netze, using green hydrogen produced locally in Vienna. The first plant for producing climate-neutral hydrogen was established in Simmering this spring.

In addition to the Rampini buses, Vienna plans to introduce buses that run exclusively on hydrogen from 2025. Ten buses from the Portuguese manufacturer CaetanoBus will operate on route 39A, further expanding the city’s commitment to sustainable transport solutions.
