Subsidies for festive lights in Vienna’s shopping areas will rise this year and next, as city authorities aim to enhance the Christmas atmosphere.

The Christmas decoration subsidy will rise from 50% to 75% to support businesses during tough economic times. The fourth quarter is the most profitable for many, officials said on Monday.

“Our goal is to have as many streets as possible festively lit,” said Peter Hanke, Vienna’s Finance Councillor. He added that the city’s Christmas lights create a welcoming atmosphere, encouraging both locals and visitors to spend more time in the area – a key factor in supporting the local economy.

Walter Ruck, President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, agreed, saying that the festive lights would help promote Vienna as a business hub.

The approval process for the lights is still ongoing, with 32 streets expected to be illuminated, similar to last year.
