Flughafen Wien AG, the operator of Vienna International Airport, has reported a substantial increase in revenue and net profit for the first half of 2024. According to the company’s latest financial results, net profit rose by 31% to €108 million, while revenue increased by 14% to €488 million compared to the same period in the previous year. The company attributed this growth to strong operating performance and favorable financial results, including eliminating debt and higher interest income.
In July 2024, Vienna Airport recorded its highest monthly passenger volume in history, with over 3.3 million travelers passing through its gates. This figure represents a 5% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels in July 2019. Additionally, a new single-day passenger record was set on July 26th, with 115,989 travelers.
Flughafen Wien AG is currently undertaking significant investments totaling more than €200 million. These include the Southern Expansion terminal project, which is expected to enhance the airport’s facilities by adding approximately 70,000 square meters of new space for lounges, dining, shopping, and additional security checkpoints. The expansion is scheduled for completion in 2027.
The company also highlighted the necessity of expanding electricity grids and improving the regulatory environment for battery storage systems to address the challenges posed by increasingly frequent negative electricity prices. The installation of a 350 KW electric charging station, powered by solar energy from the airport’s own photovoltaic systems, is set to begin by the end of August 2024.
Passenger traffic across the Flughafen Wien Group, which includes Vienna Airport and strategic investments in Malta and Kosice airports, rose by 10.1% in the first half of 2024, totaling 18.7 million passengers. Vienna Airport alone handled 14.4 million passengers during this period, a 7.9% increase from the previous year. Cargo volume also saw significant growth, with a 17.3% increase to 141,118 tonnes.
Looking ahead, Flughafen Wien AG expects to exceed 39 million passengers across its group by the end of 2024, with more than 30 million passengers anticipated at Vienna Airport. The company forecasts total revenue for the year to surpass €1 billion, with an EBITDA of over €400 million and a net profit before non-controlling interests of at least €220 million. These projections assume no significant disruptions from geopolitical events or other major restrictions on flight traffic.
