Vienna’s Tram Line 18 to Be Extended

The City of Vienna has announced plans to extend tram line 18, enhancing connections between the 3rd and 2nd districts. The extension will run from Stadionbrücke bridge to the U2 U-Bahn station Stadion.

The new service is expected to begin in September 2026, when the tram will operate the full route from Stadion to the U6 station Burggasse-Stadthalle. Work on the project is set to begin in early February and is due to be completed by June 2026.

Modernisation of Stadionbrücke

As part of the project, Stadionbrücke – an 82-metre-long, 26-metre-wide bridge crossing the Danube Canal and the A4 motorway – will undergo substantial upgrades to ensure safety for all road users. Structural improvements are vital to accommodate the additional weight of the trams. The main and cross beams will be reinforced and the abutments replaced. A new drainage system will also be installed to better manage rainwater.

Changes to Road Layout

As part of the redesign, tram tracks for line 18 will be centrally positioned on the road, with dedicated space for buses. The new layout will feature a 3.8-metre-wide, physically separated two-way cycle lane, ensuring increased safety and comfort for cyclists.

In addition to the tram extension, the project will involve extensive greening, with around 200 new trees planted along the 3.1 km tram route, contributing to a more sustainable environment.
