Austria Faces Staff Shortages in Hospitality Sector

There is a shortage of staff in Austria’s hotel and restaurant sector, according to the latest findings from an Austrian think-tank.

Agenda Austria reported a total of over 11,500 vacancies across all nine of Austria’s federal states, noting that the actual number is likely to be significantly higher, as not all jobs are registered with the Public Employment Service Austria (AMS).

Vienna tops the list with 481 unfilled positions in the hotel sector and 1,442 in the restaurant trade. Tirol follows with 1,168 and 550 vacancies, respectively, and Salzburg ranks third with 923 hotel jobs and 622 restaurant positions unfilled.

The study underscores that these shortages particularly impact the tourism industry, as many of the jobs are located in rural areas and demand fluctuates seasonally.

In response to the issue, Agenda Austria suggests several potential countermeasures. These include a reduction in income tax for the middle-income bracket, which could encourage part-time workers to increase their hours and attract foreign labour. Additionally, the think-tank points out that there are 250,000 unemployed individuals across Austria, many of whom could be incentivised to join the hotel and restaurant sector.

Earlier this month, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced an update to the country’s income tax brackets. Read more: Austria Updates Tax Categories to Benefit Taxpayers
