The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) has become the first party not currently in parliament to secure enough signatures to appear on the ballot for the September elections, party officials confirmed on Thursday.
Austria will hold elections for the National Council, the lower chamber of parliament that makes most of the laws, on September 29.
Parties not currently represented in parliament and lacking the support of at least three sitting members of parliament must gather 2,600 signatures by August 2 to qualify for the ballot.
Other parties seeking signatures include the Beer Party, led by physician and punk musician Dominik Wlazny, as well as Wandel, Liste Madeleine Petrovic, MFG (People-Freedom-Rights), the SERVUS Party, the alliance The Yellows, the Independent Austrians (DUO), the Democratic Alternative and List GAZA.
Tobias Schweiger, a member of the KPÖ leadership since 2021, is the party’s top candidate.
Despite notable successes in Styria (with Graz, the provincial capital, governed by the KPÖ) and Salzburg, the KPÖ has not been represented in parliament since 1959.
