A recent study has revealed that one in five residents of Vienna prefer to stay at home for their summer holidays.
“Their own four walls are the most popular holiday destination for the Viennese,” Markus Grießler, head of the tourism division at the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, said during a press conference.
Conducted by the Chamber in collaboration with the Austrian Institute for SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) Research, the Summer in the City 2024 study also indicates that Viennese residents typically spend an average of 15 days on holiday during the summer.
According to the findings, one in three individuals spends all of their holiday time outside of Vienna, while nearly half opt for a combination, staying at home in the city for at least a few days. A fifth do not travel away at all.
Of those who do leave Vienna for their holidays, 55% travel to another Austrian province. Nearly half travel to the Mediterranean, while 13% plan trips to long-distance destinations.
Among those who remain in Vienna, nearly two-thirds prioritise meeting up with friends and family, and more than half indulge in “food and culinary delights,” according to Grießler. Around half of the respondents seek relaxation in Vienna’s parks and gardens. Visits to cafés, outdoor pools and wine taverns are also popular summer activities for many.
Vienna’s Mayor, Michael Ludwig, expressed his satisfaction with the study. “This underlines the attractiveness of Vienna as a holiday destination and confirms the efforts of Vienna’s city government to continuously improve the quality of life in the city,” Ludwig stated.
A separate study conducted by the Austrian Hotel Association earlier this summer found that 52% of Austrian citizens nationwide were planning to take a domestic holiday this year. Read more: Half of Austrians to Holiday Domestically This Year
