Around 27% of people in Austria have at least one tattoo, a recent survey has shown.
According to the Institute for Market and Social Analysis, the proportion of tattooed people has risen by 8% since the first survey on the topic was conducted in 2013.
The study, which polled over 1,000 people, indicates that the number of individuals with multiple tattoos has also increased, up by 4% since 2013. Meanwhile, the percentage of those without any tattoos has decreased from 79% to 67% over the same period.
Younger Austrians, in particular, are using tattoos to make a statement. In the under-35 age group, more than two-fifths have one or more tattoos. In stark contrast, only 11% of those aged 60 and over have opted for this form of body art.
The survey also highlights a generally tolerant attitude towards tattoos, with 62% of respondents viewing this form of body modification as a private matter that concerns no one else. However, the older generation, especially those over 60, tend to reject this form of personal expression more frequently than the average.
This shift in cultural attitudes towards tattoos reflects broader changes in societal norms and personal expression in Austria.
