Austria recorded 253,789 new car registrations in 2024, the highest figure since 2019, which had a significantly larger total of 329,363.

Compared to 2023, this represents an increase of 6.1% (14,639 vehicles), according to Statistik Austria. Despite the overall rise, the share of fully electric cars fell last year.

In total, 369,246 vehicles were newly registered in 2024, an 8.2% increase (27,837 vehicles) compared to the previous year.

Petrol Cars Lead the Way

Petrol cars accounted for one-third of all new registrations, rising 8.6% from 2023. Petrol hybrids followed, making up 26.3% of the total, with registrations jumping by over 25%.

In contrast, diesel cars and diesel hybrids continued their long-term decline. Diesel models accounted for 17.4% of new registrations, while diesel hybrids made up 5.7%. Fully electric vehicles, which represented 17.6% of registrations (or 44,622 vehicles), also experienced a decrease of 6.3% (or 2,999) compared to 2023. However, the Austrian Traffic Club (VCÖ) highlighted in a statement that, in addition to the newly registered vehicles, “there are now more than 200,000 electric cars in Austria for the first time.” The 100,000 mark was surpassed in 2022, while in 2012, there were just 1,000 electric vehicles on Austrian roads.

“With the increasing share of electric cars, the energy consumption of traffic is falling,” explained VCÖ expert Michael Schwendinger. “On average, electric cars require about two-thirds less energy to drive than petrol and diesel cars.”

According to Statistik Austria, more than three-quarters of electric vehicles and around two-thirds of all new car registrations were made by legal entities, companies, and public authorities.
