A monument to Graz’s first petrol pump was unveiled in central Jakominiplatz on Monday, marking the 100th anniversary of the historic site.
According to City Hall and the Chamber of Commerce, it represents a key piece of local automotive history.
Jakominiplatz, now largely closed to private vehicles and serving as a major public transport hub, was the location of Graz’s inaugural petrol pump, which was established on September 16, 1924 by former racing driver Heinrich Haas and cinema proprietor Karl Löffler. Vienna’s first petrol station followed a year later.
The petrol pump’s operation came to an end on 17 January 1964, when the last operator applied for the business licence to be withdrawn. The kiosk was later demolished.
The newly installed pump, complete with an analogue counter displaying the amount of fuel dispensed, is now situated near the bus stop of bus 32.
